School has finally started – congratulations and good luck to all our brand new Kindergartners!
For those of you whose little ones haven’t yet started Kindergarten, there’s still time to read 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten! It sounds like a challenge, but reading 1,000 books is easier than you might think!
- By reading just one book per day, you will reach the 1,000-book goal in just under three years.
- If a child hears three books at bedtime every night, you will meet your goal within one year
Every book counts. Every time you read the same book (again and again and again!), it counts. Board books count. Picture books count. Magazines designed for kids count (Babybug, Ladybug, National Geographic Kids, to name just a few). Books read by a caregiver or grandparent or friendly seatmate on the bus count (OK, so we’re not riding a lot of busses right now, but you get the point!).

Even if your library visits these days are fewer, farther between, and sans kids, you can even complete this program without setting one foot in the library! We’ve come a long way since everything shut down in the spring, and we are excited to offer online tracking for your 1,000 Books through our ReadSquared platform. (Sound familiar? This is the same platform we used for the summer reading program, and you can even use the same login!)
If you want to find good books to read from home, check out Hoopla or Overdrive/Libby. Click here to find out more about using our online ebook platforms. You can also try Tumblebooks, which are animated, talking picture books accessible from our Kids Homepage. Find out more about Tumblebooks on their FAQ page.
