Many homeschool families have started their learning journey already, and hopefully you have an idea of what your first few months will look like, but it’s always nice to have support!
Similar to remote learning families, you’ll want to be sure you have a few things in place as you get into the year.
- It’s helpful if you can carve out a space for schooling (when you’re working in the home); you can check out last week’s workshop for setting up for remote learning for a few ideas.
- The flexibility of learning wherever you are is one giant perk of homeschooling, so put together a little kit (a notebook, a few writing utensils, maybe some crayons or colored pencils) to have ready for on-the-go learning. Storage clipboards like these are easy to keep in the car!
- Keep a schedule. While you might not stick to the same type of lessons each day, having a framework for getting ready for the day, settling in to learn, exercise or snack breaks, and knowing when the schooling part of the day might end is comforting to children, especially younger ones.
- Know when to ask for help! We all have strengths and weaknesses, and depending on the age of your child, having a support group who can fill in the gaps can be immensely helpful.
Along those lines, there are recommendations from Common Sense Media for websites that can support and supplement your curriculum, and many other web resources with homeschooling information.
If you’re looking for more support, or just a reminder that you’re on the right track, register for our Nuts and Bolts of Homeschooling in Massachusetts workshop on Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 PM.
Hosted by AHEM (Advocates for Home Education in Massachusetts, Inc.), this workshop will get you going with everything you need to know! It covers Massachusetts homeschool guidelines; the history of homeschooling in MA; writing your education plan; choosing a form of evaluation; and local homeschool policies. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the session.
SPACE IS LIMITED. REGISTER TODAY!
