When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
We all judge books by their covers. At least, I know I sure do. I just listened to the on-CD version of When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, and honestly, I never would have had I just seen it on the shelf. That is one U-G-L-Y cover. But it won some award or something and everyone's been saying it's pretty good, so I thought I'd give it a try. Here's what I thought:
Pragmatic latch-key kid Miranda guesses she's lucky that the week her best friend stops wanting anything to do with her is also the week best friends AnneMarie and Julia break up. Sal and Miranda had been inseparable since birth, and his sudden avoidance comes as out of the blue as that punch to the gut some weird kid gave Sal on their last walk home. Miranda makes the best of a sad situation, and builds new friendship with AnneMarie, funnyboy Colin, and eventually even Marcus, the same weird kid with the suckerpunch. As the story unfolds, Marcus's sudden attack isn't the strangest thing to happen. Miranda's house is broken into but the only thing to go missing is a pair of old boots. And she's been receiving cryptic messages that are starting to scare her: things like, "I am coming to save your friend and myself... I will not be myself when I reach you." Their writer knows things that no one--NO ONE--could possibly know. Impossible things. Rebecca Stead proves herself a master storyteller, revealing subtle clues so deftly that readers unravel the puzzle at nearly the same pace as Miranda (a pretty "smart girl").
So don't judge this book by its cover. Even ugly books can tell a really great story.
